Br. Chris Derby

Chris Derby, S.J., entered the Society of Jesus in 1988, and professed vows in 1990. As a Jesuit Brother Chris is committed to the service of the people of God as a member of the Society of Jesus through the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Chris is the son of Brian and Clare Derby of Saint Frances de Chantal Parish in Wantagh, NY, on the south shore of Long Island. He graduated from Regis High School in Manhattan in 1982 and Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, in 1986, with a bachelor's degree in religion. After college, Chris joined the Jesuit Volunteer Corps: East, serving at Nativity Mission Center on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and Camp Monserrate in Lake Placid, NY, from 1986 until 1988 when he left Nativity to enter the Jesuit Novitiate. After the Novitiate, Chris studied English literature at Fordham University in the Bronx, NY, from which he earned a masters' degree in 1992. He then taught English (for the first time) at Xavier High School from 1992-95; and studied theology at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, MA, from 1995-97 from which he received a masters' degree in theological studies. Chris then taught at Nativity and also served as a mentor to new teachers and director of Camp Monserrate. Chris moved over to the English department at Xavier High School in 2000 and served there until June of 2004 when he entered full-time vocation ministry. In addition to teaching, Chris also directed eight of the school's plays, including his award-winning production of The Laramie Project. In addition, Chris serves as the chair of the Board of Trustees for the Jesuit Volunteers Corps: East in Baltimore and represents the Brothers of the USA on Father General's International Jesuit Brothers Commission in Rome. |
