Dear Friends,
The scripture passage that strikes me most as the Haitian people struggle in the aftermath of the Port au Prince earthquake is Matthew 26:38.
“My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me.”
Friends, I invite you to feel the humanity of our Lord, and His complete faith amidst the fear and anxiety of all that is about to happen to Him. The Haitian people have suffered much these days. They are raw in vulnerability to the realities of the world, and all they can do to prevent despair is wholly depend on the love of God manifested through the people. This tension between suffering and compassionate love identifies the complexity of our God. Christ protects us in this love and provides the angel to give us strength, just as God provided Him strength in His suffering and death.
Let us recall in prayer the many people who have suffered and died in Haiti; and too, hold in our hearts the many who continue to suffer and those who serve their needs.
Good and gracious God your Son Jesus Christ assumed the cross for our salvation and as a testimony to eternal love for you. Grant the people of Haiti your loving compassion in their time of struggle. Grant eternal rest unto all those who have died; and grant hope to all people in this catastrophe, for we know that only faith can heal all things. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
